A Simple Box Construction : 2009
Format : CDr
As I’ve stated here before I rarely accept promos. I just dislike the obligation it implies. But regardless, once again I said yes, but have been carrying this release around for a few weeks almost dreading listening to it. I figured anything that looked this cool had to suck.
And the package is incredible. The two pro-printed discs are housed in a handmade gatefold cover, the inside a black envelope and the outside is made of a wood veneer. The whole thing is housed in a folded chipboard cover and everything is hand stamped, glued, block printed…I can’t even imagine how long doing one of them took let alone the 300 that were made. It’s insane. The man behind the packaging is also behind A Simple Box Construction as well.
So do the sounds inside match the packaging? It’s pretty close. Both discs are composed entirely of layered guitar tracks using various effects. It ranges from very haunting and beautiful passages to more aggressive, droning distortion. Sometimes the two are combined and the effect is pretty mesmerizing. Godspeed You Black Emperor, Skull Flower, Vomit Orchestra and more recently Bosse are a few artists that immediately come to mind. The only downside for me was a few of the tracks were a bit long. A lot of the droning guitar stuff starts to lose my interest after the 7 or 8 minute mark. I also thought the two disc set was a bit overwhelming for such little deviation between tracks.
Overall it’s a decent release, but I would’ve liked to have heard a bit more variation on such a monumental production. Still, huge bragging rights for the packaging alone. It’s probably one of the best I’ve seen for an underground release.
