Impetuous Ritual : Unholy Congregation of Hypocritical Ambivalence

I have to begin this review by stating that I’m tired of seeing the Portal comparisons. Anyone with an educated ear for this genre of music will be able to tell you that the two are completely different entities. Anyone in-the-know will also be aware that the two members that Impetuous Ritual shares with Portal were also part of the song writing nucleus of another Death Metal band that existed near a decade ago. For anyone who may have listened to said band they will clearly see some of Impetuous Ritual’s sound in it’s very early infant stages. There has also been a shift in line-up since that on the debut, potentially offering some new ideas to the composition of the tracks on this album.

As the album opens with “Verboten Genesis”, there’s little time for any “buttering up” as Unholy Congregation… gets into the swing of things pretty fast in a flurry of speed. My first thoughts were that the band has obviously retained the dense murk from the previous album and even emphasized on it more. Given my musical tastes, this is total ear candy for me. The chaotic riffing is still very present, demanding multiple listens before you can even begin to grasp what is going on. The percussion…fuck. A new drummer but no less heavy handed than the last. As soon as I’d wrapped my head around what was happening, the next track begins and the listener to thrown back into the storm with “Venality In Worship”.

Third track in, “Sentient Aberrations” really strikes a chord with me. A slightly less pronounced vocal style is utilized during this track, utterly subterranean and neanderthal murmurs not too far removed from those on Incantation’s “Mortal Throne Of Nazarene”. They kind of waver in briefly before you’re smacked closed fist in the face with Impetuous’ patented solo style alternating after each verse. The intensity settles momentarily as the album fades into “Blight”, a slower, yet still unsettling piece that almost serves as a breather being that it’s almost ten minutes long. The last half of this particular track stand out, utter misery inducing riffing backed by the cavernous beat of a drum and sutra-like moans.

“Inservitude Of Asynchronous Duality” is where things pick up again. One particular vocal passage that can only be described as “unhinged”. For me this is the best cut on the album. It defines their sound – intense yet foreboding…completely maniacal.

What could I compare this to? Who gives a fuck. I’m not going to feed readers with a list of names that share some very remote similarities. There is nothing out there that really resembles anything that’s happening here as Impetuous Ritual have their own game far removed from what anyone else out there is doing. Unholy Congregation… is an album that needs to be listened to as an album, from start to finish to realize it’s true intent.

I have immersed myself in Death Metal for nigh on 18 years now, and right now I am left with the firm belief that the album I have been looking for during this time has been made, I’m holding it in my hands. That album is Impetuous Ritual’s “Unholy Congregation of Hypocritical Ambivalence”. If my rushed and poorly written review doesn’t convince you, head on over to the Profound Lore site for a sample.

I can’t fault this at all. 10 out of fucking 10.
